Mr Farmer, currently posted in New Delhi, is expected to take up the position next month. He replaces Lex Bartlem, who was appointed in February 2009.

Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd says Australia's links with Bali are longstanding and growing.

"Our official, community and business links with the island province represent an important part of Australia's broader relationship with Indonesia," Mr Rudd said in a statement.

Hundreds of thousands of Australians travel to Bali every year, making the consulate one of Australia's busiest.

Mr Farmer has previously served overseas in Hanoi, Abu Dhabi, Dhaka, Colombo, Manila, Bangkok, Dar es Salaam and Jakarta.
