Top Chinese legislator Wu Bangguo met Bali Governor Made Mangku Pastika immediately after his arrival in Denpasar on Saturday and called for closer regional exchanges between Bali and Chinese provinces.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of China, the country's top legislature, said tourism and cultural cooperation serves an important part of China-Indonesian ties.

"My visit is aimed at elevating the China-Indonesia strategic partnership including regional exchanges to a new high," said Wu.

"I hope Bali would build stronger links with Chinese provinces, enhance and expand tourism cooperation, study cooperation in agriculture and low-carbon economy so as to foster exchanges in fields such as culture, sports and sanitation and add momentum to the promotion of understanding and friendship between the two peoples and further development of bilateral ties," he said.

For his part, Pastika said he admired the great achievements China has made and wished Bali could benefit more from its rapid economic growth.

This is Wu's first visit to Indonesia, which coincided with the 60th anniversary of China-Indonesia diplomatic ties.

Wu flew to Bali after concluding his four-day visit to Cambodia. The three-nation Southeast Asia tour will also take Wu to Thailand.
