State airport operator PT Angkasa Pura I has allocated more than Rp 1 trillion (US$110 million) in new investment to finance the expansion of the international terminal at Ngurah Rai International Airport in Bali.

The expansion project, to be financed with the company’s own funds, was expected to begin in the third quarter of this year, Angkasa Pura I president director Bambang Darwoto said in Jakarta on Monday.

Currently, the airport’s international terminal covers around 15,000 square meters. The airport’s domestic terminal covers a larger area at around 70,000 square meters.

Under the planned expansion, Angkasa Pura would switch the domestic terminal with the international terminal to enable it to cope with the increasing number of international passengers, Bambang said.
The new international terminal would be then expanded to 120,000 sq meters and equipped with new accommodation facilities, he said.

By 2013, the aiport’s terminals would cover a combined area of 190,000 square meters, and would be able to accommodate up to 20 million passengers a year.

Although the expansion is scheduled to commence in the third quarter of this year, Angkasa Pura has yet to announce contractors to carry out the project. The company was still working on the design of the new international terminal, Bambang said.

“Bali is beautiful, so the airport should be beautiful too,” he said.

Earlier, it was reported that the Ngurah Rai expansion would cost up to Rp 1.7 trillion.

In May, Bambang said the project would be complicated because work had to be carried out in operational areas.

“Angkasa Pura’s housing complex, which contains about 170 houses, will also need to be relocated to make a way for the expansion,” he said.
